The “Yeah Glo!” rapper and King enlisted designer Bent Kahina for the custom red carpet ensemble. Sadai Banks was tapped for makeup, and Coca Michelle for nails. Hairstylist and wig maker Tokyo Stylez was tasked with recreating Lopes’s famous hairstyle—marked by multiple three-plait braids morphing into rings, and heavy bangs.
As she prepped in her hotel room, GloRilla listened to music, scrolled TikTok, and enjoyed a pre-VMAs meal. “I’ve been working out a lot, so today I had a meal prep from my trainer Rob [Worthy],” she says. “Pan-seared salmon, coconut rice, and broccolini!”
After arriving at the VMAs—where she walked the carpet, caught up with Tyla, and enjoyed much of the ceremony—GloRilla went backstage and changed into her performance look: A shimmering, two-piece pinstripe ensemble that was a callback to the suit Janet Jackson wore in her 1990 “Alright” video. “I’m a fan of a lot of great female artists that came before me, so I wanted to pay a tribute to them,” Glorilla says, adding that the opportunity to perform at the VMAs “meant everything,” to her. “I’m truly blessed!”
Ahead, GloRilla shares her 2024 MTV VMAs diary with Vogue.
