As someone who has stayed up until 11:30 p.m. to watch Saturday Night Live ever since I was a small and unpopular child, there is plenty about the show that I feel well within my rights to criticize. (Remember when they platformed known transphobe Elon Musk? And known transphobe Dave Chappelle?) But I’ve always nurtured a soft spot for “goodnights,” the longtime SNL practice of the night’s celebrity host and musical guest coming out to say—you guessed it—good night to the audience, as the show’s entire cast hugs and cavorts onstage behind them.
This past weekend’s goodnights appeared to be no different from usual, with host Mikey Madison taking the stage alongside musical guest Morgan Wallen. Madison thanked everyone, the likes of Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman embraced behind her, and it was almost a wrap on the episode when Wallen whispered something in Madison’s ear, hugged her, then confidently and churlishly strode offstage well before the credits had finished rolling. Wallen then posted a photo to Instagram Stories from his private plane with the caption “Get me to God’s country” over an image of the runway. (Of course, if there’s one thing we know about God, it’s that He definitely wants us to burn through the remainder of the earth’s resources by flying private!)
