I don’t know about you, but I tend to loop on certain clothing items. I’ll spend all of my energy and money looking for *the perfect pair of jeans* only to realize I already have jeans (lol, duh), and what I really needed was a different kind of pant, like a soft trouser or pull-on pant.
So, in hopes of preventing that kind of looping this fall, I did a little 10-minute closet audit the other day. I took note of the areas of my wardrobe that were pretty well stocked and good to go, and I noted the areas that were lacking and could use some reinforcements.
Today I’m sharing my findings! Here’s what’s NOT on my fall wish list — and what I’m looking for instead:
NOT SHOPPING FOR: jeans
I know! It’s kind of sacrilegious to say you’re not shopping for jeans in the fall. Denim and autumn go together like PB&J.
But overall, jeans just aren’t the comfiest pant option for me most of the time. Not to get all TMI, but I don’t particularly like denim bunching up in my hoo-hah.
Plus, I already have a very comfortable pair of jeans — the Reformation Cary Low Rise Baggy Jean, in case you’re wondering. I’ve got plenty of b-team options, too. No need to get more jeans.
WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR INSTEAD: soft pants
So I’m pivoting away from denim and looking for soft, relaxed pants with drawstring waists. Bonus points if they have a little pizazz, like those plaid pants (left) or green track pants (right). And when it comes to those brown corduroy pants, all I can say is the heart wants what the heart wants.
NOT SHOPPING FOR: heavy coats
I’ve been slowly and intentionally adding a heavy coat to my wardrobe here and there over the past 7 years or so. That intention has paid off, and now I’ve got 4 of ’em. Feels so good to reach this long-term wardrobe goal! Just a reminder that building a quality wardrobe takes time.
WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR INSTEAD: light jackets or vests
I’m trying to up my layering game this fall, so I’m looking for lighter jackets that’ll be easy to throw on with jeans or track pants. My color palette includes shades of blue, green, brown, and tan, and I’m gravitating to casual fabrics like fleece, canvas, and denim.

NOT SHOPPING FOR: black boots
I’ve got two casual black boots and one dressy black boot. I’m reminding myself of this because it’s so easy to default to a black boot — it goes with everything, it won’t show dirt, etc. But I’m all set on black boots, so I need to push myself past that default.
WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR INSTEAD: a good pair of tan/brown boots
Brown is a little softer than black, and I’d love to bring that softness to some of my fall outfits. I’m looking for a boot that’s flat-ish and a little chunky, casual and worn-in. Ideally I’d love the Frye Campus boots (middle) but I’m also looking at the Steve Madden Riggs boot (left) or Steve Madden Ruskin boot (right) as budget friendly alternatives.

What about you? Are you in the mood to do a little closet inventory? Keep it light — set your phone timer for 10 minutes and have a good look-around your closet. Jot down the areas that need a little love, while noting the areas where you have enough. And if you feel like it, report back in the comments. I’d love to hear. 🙂
