Over the last few months, we’ve watched on as Timothée Chalamet developed a new sartorial habit. Now, we can confidently say it’s become a full-blown obsession: The actor is addicted to neck-cessorizing.
We first registered Chalamet’s scarf fetish on December 13, when he went full cosplay mode at the New York premiere of his Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. While it was the leading man’s Bieber-esque swoop of blonde hair that caught our eye (yes, he was paying homage to Bob Dylan at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, but it was more boy band than folk), he also rocked a large black-and-white plaid scarf. But Chalamet’s scarf mania predates the premiere, kicking off a week earlier at a Nashville screening when he layered what appeared to be a football scarf under a brown leather jacket.
The actor’s scarf obsession knows no bounds—no color, size, or material is off-limits. The day before the New York premiere, Chalamet arrived at the Ed Sullivan Theater for a Late Show taping, a marigold scarf swallowing his neck whole. He wore a similarly large emerald green one for the Rome premiere on Friday. But he’s also dabbled in skinny scarves, adding glam rock touches with a pink and gold number from Bibi Star and a blue accompaniment to his Hiader Ackermann for Tom Ford suit at the Golden Globes.
The actor has seemingly taken a page out of Bad Bunny’s book, adding more delicate silk pieces to his repertoire. During some downtime in Paris, Chalamet balanced a masculine NFL jacket with a mini Chanel bag, a New York City Ballet baseball cap, and a black and white neckerchief. He brought that same energy to Rome, where he accessorized his brown suit and turquoise knit sweater with an off-white scarf.
The cause of Chalamet’s extreme scarf obsession is still unclear. Yes, obviously it’s winter and it’s cold out, but why scarves and not turtlenecks? Is this an auteur thing? Either way, you could definitely say that we’re all wrapped up in our theories…
