The Supers Came Out for a Special New York Screening of In Vogue: The 90s

There’s no shortage of mononymous talking heads who pop up with their input, from designers like Tom, Marc, Miuccia, Michael, and Stella, to cover alumni including Gwyneth, Naomi, Kim, Victoria, and Kate. But the personalities who prompted the biggest laughs during the screening were undoubtedly the editors involved in making the magic. As photographer Hunter Abrams said: “Grace and Tonne just do deadpan so well—and Carlyne is never not going to give you an iconic quote.”

Sitting front row in a plush armchair, SNL funnywoman and impersonator Chloe Fineman (someone who has a high bar for humor) was bowled over laughing, particularly during a scene where Tonne weighed in on that seismic Mark Wahlberg for Calvin Klein campaign. “Everything that Carlyne said, I kept thinking, ‘How do I play her on the show,’” Fineman told Vogue, trailing off by mentioning, “I’m dying to play an editor. We do have an Anna wig at the show…”

“Like any art form, you take fashion and Vogue seriously—but there’s something about this that shows there’s levity, creativity, playfulness, and freedom,” Fineman added. “What I love about the ’90s is that everyone is so authentically themselves. That’s what draws me to want to play people.”

“I absolutely loved it and even though there was so much humor, it touches on tough subjects too,” Quannah Chasinghorse said. “It really goes into the issues of the time back then and how they affected not just the fashion industry, but the world.” The model and actress, who was born in 2002 and now spends her days working with the very people in the doc, said she felt a new sense of privilege. “It dives deep. I feel very inspired! I’ve always loved the ’90s, so it was really fun to learn. There wasn’t one moment where I looked away from the screen.”

Fellow runway regular Precious Lee agreed that the more heart-wrenching elements surprised her. “I’m sitting there crying next to Tory Burch,” Lee laughed after the screening. “I always get emotional and overwhelmed anytime I see a really authentic fashion moment.”

As guests huddled at the bar to discuss their thoughts and favorite moments, there was a surprise in store—the ’90s Vogues were up for grabs. Suddenly reverting to their inner kids as if collecting and swapping baseball or Pokemon cards, it was akin to a supermarket sweep challenge to try to find their favorite supers. “I’ll give you three of these for one Linda cover,” Prabal Gurung was overheard telling everyone in a group.
