Typically, Vogue’s weekly Best Dressed list spans the globe—pinpointing stylish stars who stood out on the international red carpets. But this week, the annual Venice Film Festival proved too good to look elsewhere; A-listers such as Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Taylor Russell, and more all descended upon the event in their finest evening attire—inspiring us to compile a Best Dressed list dedicated entirely to the late-summer celebration of cinema.
Can you blame us? All week long, statement gowns, vintage designs, and one-of-a-kind couture creations have hit the Venice step and repeat. On the custom front, Jenna Ortega shined at the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premiere in a red Dior gown that was a contemporary spin on the dress famously worn by Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) in the original film. At the premiere of Maria, Angelina Jolie turned heads in a Tamara Ralph gown with an Old Hollywood-style faux fur shawl. Now that’s a movie star.
Strapless column gowns had a major moment on the red carpets this week—whether it was Nicole Kidman in custom Schiaparelli, Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé, or Amal Clooney in her ombré-style Bach Mai dress. Clearly the fashion M.O. was to be as statuesque as humanly possible.
There were a few archival wins at the festival, too. Jury member (and budding fashion icon) Taylor Russell was a vision in a white Chanel gown from the spring 1993 collection, punctuated with feathers. Emily Ratajkowski, meanwhile, chose a tiered green Gucci gown from the fall 2004 collection (yes, Tom Ford era—naturally.)
