The 3 Beauty Trends That Dominated TikTok In 2024

The Morning Shed

Like so many of 2024’s defining beauty trends, the “morning shed” originated on TikTok – and isn’t unproblematic. Users cover themselves with serums, mouth tape, bonnets, sheet masks, curlers, etc, before going to bed at night, then film themselves “shedding” their various layers in the morning. Naturally, dermatologists have raised concerns about the risks associated with the hashtag, with Dr Purvisha Patel telling Vogue it’s “a recipe for disaster” skincare-wise, particularly when actives are involved. One to leave behind as we move into 2025.

Demure Beauty

Not that TikTok is all bad, by any means. Beauty diehards translated the “very modest, very mindful” guidelines broken down in Jools Lebron’s “demure” clip into looks that felt clean and classic: think a swipe of blush, nude lips, almond-shaped nails, and glossy hair with nary a flyaway in sight. Trending but timeless.

One-Product Make-Up

A key theme in 2024: doing more with less time, energy, and product (just think of the popularity of lip stains by the likes of Wonderskin). Make-up artist Emily Wood’s “scribble liner” technique – in which she pulls off a full-face contour using nothing but lip liner – has racked up more than 25 million views. “It’s just easy, accessible, and sustainable,” Wood told Vogue of the rise of one-product makeup back in October.
