Whew, 2024 has been quite a year. I’ve had a lot of highs and A LOT of lows. I’m thankful for everything this year brought, but if I’m being honest, I am ready for it to be over. While I’m not usually a huge New Year’s Eve gal, this year I am very much looking forward to celebrating. Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to get dressed up? Today I am going to walk through some of my favorite NYE outfit ideas for 2024. Whether you’re a stay out all night and party girly or one who prefers a quiet, relaxing night in, I’ve got your looks covered!

Planning Your NYE Look

While it might seem a bit early to be sharing New Year’s Eve outfit ideas, I actually think it’s the perfect time to start planning. One reason for this is that many of my favorite retailers are running great sales for the holidays. If you shop within the next few weeks you might be able to grab a stunning dress or that pair of heels that you’ve been eyeing for a great price! Another reason to shop early is because nailing down your outfit now leaves you with one less thing to stress about during the busy holiday season.
Things to Consider
Okay, so you’ve decided the time is now…but where do you start!? There are a couple of factors that come into play before selecting the perfect ‘fit. Here are a few to consider!
1. What are your plans?
Many of the NYE outfit ideas you come across will be all about sparkle and shine for a night out. However, that doesn’t always match up to the occasion. Will you be dressing for a cocktail party, a black tie event, or a low-key night with friends? I would recommend following the appropriate dress code, but also, don’t be afraid to opt for a bit dressier look, if you prefer. Personally, I have always subscribed to the adage “better to be overdressed than underdressed”.
2. Are you dressed comfortably?
One of the hardest New Year’s Eve lessons that I have learned is to be prepared for changes in transportation. This was especially true when I was living in NYC. For example, you might have an Uber pre-booked or maybe you plan to take the subway. But, the next thing you know, your best laid plans go sideways, and you end up having to walk 25 blocks. On a busy night like this, I always want to ensure that I have comfort in mind, especially if there’s a potential for a long walk. For this reason, I’ve included some NYE outfit ideas that include comfortable shoes and appropriate outerwear.
3. What will the weather be like?
Depending on where you’ll be celebrating, it could be COLD. But then…when you get to your destination, it could be HOT! Therefore, I typically dress in layers for this holiday. While I don’t like the freezing cold temps to stop me from wearing my favorite party dress, I’m always sure to add tights, a sweater, a heavy coat, etc., knowing that I could find myself in a number of different settings.
Where to Shop for NYE Outfits
As I previously mentioned, so many of my favorite retailers offer great styles for NYE. And luckily, most of them already have their party shops up and running! This makes it easier than ever to find all of the festive pieces you need. Now is a great time to bookmark the styles you are eyeing so that you can pounce on them as soon as they (hopefully) go one sale during Black Friday or Cyber Monday!

Now onto the fun stuff – What are we wearing to ring in 2025!? I am highlighting a few of my favorite materials, textures, and trends to put together NYE outfit ideas that are beautiful, special, and oh-so-fun!
Sparkles and Sequins
Like florals for spring, sparkles and sequins for New Year’s Eve are groundbreaking, right? But really, there’s no escaping it. Sequins and all things sparkle will forever be a cornerstone of holiday dressing. And to be honest, they should be!
I am currently super into longer paillette sequins, such as this silver dress and this gold skirt, (which would look so chic with a crisp white button-down). I have also been gravitating toward an unexpected color in sequins, such as this mini dress, this wine-colored skirt, and these stunning sequin pants.
If you are looking to keep things simple, I think a classic sequin mini dress is the way to go. This strapless one would look great with a fun NYE crown headband and black platforms. Warning…the headbands tend to sell out quickly! I also love an easy long sleeve sequin dress. This little cutie doesn’t break the bank, and it comes in multiple colors!
Fun Feather Looks
If we are talking about party wear, you know I am going to bring feathers into the conversation! If you’re looking for an easy, yet stunning, NYE outfit idea, these feather trim pants paired with a bow heel and a statement sweater would be great. Just add this black embellished bag, and you’ll be set!
Want something a bit more unexpected? I would try this printed mini skirt with this feather trim top and black boots! Or, if you prefer a smaller touch of feathers, you could pair this sequin maxi dress with this feather bag for a chic cream look. And lastly, this mini dress or this maxi would each make for a chic and simple option. The feathers on the sleeves add a hint of fun, without being over the top.
Faux Fur NYE Outfit Ideas
Faux fur is a beautiful, rich texture to add to any NYE outfit. This is especially true if you’re celebrating somewhere cooler! Bordeaux continues to trend, and I love the idea of this sequin skirt worn with this faux fur cropped jacket and these beautiful crystal statement earrings.
I’m also crushing on the thought of swapping out the traditional black or silver tones for a dark chocolate hue. If you’re comfortable showing a little skin, this dress with sheer details is a stunning option for ringing in the New Year. It would look awesome paired with this dark brown faux fur jacket and this sequin clutch. Or, this oversized faux fur stole is an equally chic outerwear option.
Stunning Sets
At this point, matching sets are part of my fashion DNA. So you’ll likely see one or two on each of my “what to wear” post! When it comes to NYE outfit ideas, the first set on my list is this black velvet top and these coordinating pants. I’d tie this look together with this oversized tuxedo jacket. If velvet isn’t your thing, but instead, you’re more into lace and sequins, I would check out these pants and this jacket. How beautiful is the lace and embellishment combination on these?
Going in a completely different direction, this red bow top caught my eye earlier this week. You could pair it with these red pants and these heels for a fun night out. NYE Outfit Ideas for a Night In
Are you planning to stay in and watch the ball drop from the comfort of your couch? You can still dress fun and festive! If you want the ultimate cozy set, I would highly suggest these relaxed cashmere pants and the coordinating hoodie. I can speak from experience, they are divine! And you could always add a pretty headband for a little sparkle at midnight.
If you want to be comfortable, but also a bit more festive, check out this cozy gold set. It looks chic enough to wear outside of the house! Or, if you really want to go all in, you could wear these feather-trimmed pajamas or these metallic pjs. No matter which comfy outfit you select, don’t forget your cozy socks and either these glasses or this fun headband to add a little 2025 flare!
NYE Outfit Ideas for Every Occasion
When it comes to selecting your NYE attire, I stick to the same “rule” that I do for every dressing occasion – You should feel comfortable, and confident, and yourself!
