As Drake once said, “Kendrick just opened his mouth, someone go hand him a Grammy right now.” And that’s exactly what the Recording Academy did.
At the 2025 Grammys, Kendrick Lamar took home five awards for his song “Not Like Us,” including Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Lamar’s sweeping success was seemingly the final nail in the coffin in his bitter feud (one so notorious it has its own Wikipedia page) with the Candian rapper. But while the Academy made their allegiance clear (judging by the utter glee with which the music industry’s upper echelons hollered “A minoooooor,” he was the uncontested victor), he didn’t stop there. While Lamar’s unrivaled pen has earned him a Peabody Award, he turned to his fashion to rub a little salt in his rival’s wound.
He took to the stage in a jean jacket over a white tee, light-wash pants, and a matching baseball cap from Maison Margiela, yet another form of wordplay: the denim-on-denim look is otherwise known as a Canadian tuxedo, taking aim at Drake’s home country. The rapper accessorized his double denim with an enormous, diamond-encrusted Jesus piece around his neck and a pair of black leather lace-up shoes.
Lamar’s sartorial statement did not go unnoticed. X users were quick to point out his subtle, yet thoughtful jab. “kendrick inspires me to be a bigger, deeper, more passionate hater,” one person posted. “While wearing a Canadian tuxedo is diabolical work,” another added. Even rapper JPEGMAFIA commented on the outfit: “LMFAO Kendrick is funny AF. He accepted his award for the greatest diss song of all time. in a CANADIAN TUXEDO.”
