Speaking while at the launch party for 11 Juillet—a line which sees elegant handbags accentuated with heirloom-worthy diamond, malachite, mother of pearl, and onyx emblems—Holmes had teamed her glossy black calf leather Clementine crossbody from the sister-led brand with an all-black outfit (and a bordeaux manicure for good measure).
As for what’s typically in her bag, as well as her keys and phone, Holmes said she will never leave home without some of her trusty rosebud salve lip balm—and a book for the subway. Right now, it’s a copy of Intermezzo, Sally Rooney’s highly-anticipated novel centered around the complicated dynamics between two brothers in the wake of their father’s death.
Taking the train tends to provide some outfit inspiration too, as does checking out what fellow culture lovers are wearing. “I love to go to the opera and the ballet—not just on the gala nights. I always like to get dressed up too and see the beautiful outfits the ladies wear. I actually follow the opera Instagram and I love to see how people put things together.” With the American Ballet Theater and New York City Ballet spring seasons on the horizon, Holmes said she’s readying to dust down some great vintage dresses she picked up recently at her favorite spot, Dessert Vintage on Orchard Street in lower Manhattan. No stranger to a little bit of frou-frou where necessary, she teased that we can expect to see an abundance of feathers. “Wearing a glamorous dress to the ballet or opera makes me feel like I am the New York woman I dreamt of being when I was a little girl,” she laughed.
