Getting dressed as a form of moving meditation

I was recently listening to David Foster Wallace’s 2005 commencement speech, This Is Water, and it got me thinking about moving through my days with more awareness.

This is one thing I like about getting dressed in the mornings — it’s a little opportunity for me to practice awareness.

To get dressed, I have to connect to my physical body — what does my body need today? Does it want softness and comfort? Does it want boldness and a push?

To get dressed, I have to connect with the contents of my day — what am I doing today? Who will I be spending time with?

To get dressed, I have to connect with the earth and the season — how does it feel outside today? How can I use my clothes to embrace the elements (or shelter from them)?

All of this awareness can happen in the span of a few seconds, but it’s nice when I can sink into it a little more. This is one reason I’m so drawn to clothing and style — it can become a form of moving meditation.
