Forget Glitzy Gowns—The Golden Globes Were All About the Slick Suits

Last night, the 82nd annual Golden Globes red carpet delivered plenty of Hollywood glamour. Glitzy gowns, whether custom or vintage, made plenty of appearances on stars like Ariana Grande, Angelina Jolie, and Viola Davis (who even recycled a Gucci dress). But a handful of stars strayed from the pack and slipped into slick suits instead—and, in our books, they completely stole the show.

Sure, suits are nothing new during awards season: plenty of iconic two-pieces have hit the red carpet over the years (including that backwards Celine Dion tux at the 1999 Oscars, and that famous Julia Roberts suit at the 1990 Globes). But the new crop of Hollywood suits was less about embodying traditional tailoring, and more about favoring sculptural silhouettes with a twist.

Take The Bear star Ayo Edebiri in her custom gray Loewe suit: It was based on the aforementioned look that Roberts wore back in 1990, though Edebiri and designer Jonathan Anderson modernized the silhouette with an extra-slouchy pant and gold feather tie detail. “I felt really inspired by the costumes [Anderson] designed for Luca Guadagnino’s film Queer,” Edebiri told Vogue, “and loved the idea of playing around with menswear—especially with a suit that felt of that era.” Equally as good was the ivory McQueen double-breasted blazer that Emma D’Arcy wore, styled with a white shirt with oversized collar; the exaggerated proportions gave a it a fresh feel.

Of course, the night’s leading men experimented with suits too. Though many often wear suits during awards season, a few stars pushed the envelope and played around with theatrical finishes. Colman Domingo completed his black Valentino suit with a bow-wrapped necktie; Eddie Redmayne also wore the Italian label, opting for a bold, all-over checkered finish.

Subtle prints and textures shined as well, as seen on Tilda Swinton and her Chanel tweed, and Kate Winslet and her floral Erdem suit. With subtle rosette accents, the latter was the perfect combination of classic yet contemporary. And better yet, it served as a fresh alternative to a floral-printed or embellished gown. These approaches are ones we want to see throughout the 2025 awards season. In a sea of gowns (which have their own glamorous appeal), the slick suits stand out.
