Now just a week away from releasing her long-awaited third album Eusexua, FKA twigs requires a fresh trim. And who better to do it than herself?
The musician has been sporting a “skullet,” as well as some bleached eyebrows, through the evolving Eusexua era. A skullet is simply a more extreme version of a mullet, which twigs amps up with completely clean-shaven sides cut in contrast to the rest of her long, textured hair. Her weapon of choice was an at-home electric razor.

The look bolsters twigs’ cyberpunk leaning, extraterrestrial-indebted aesthetic, while also harkening back to her Jamaican heritage. The unconventional cut also, for me, brings to mind the rebellious looks of late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat: in the ’70s, when asked about his new haircut, he said he wanted to “look as if he were coming and going at the same time.”
The avant-pop star often works with French hairstylist Louis Souvestre, who styled her hair for British Vogue’s cover. The pair are diligent researchers when it comes to her image, and reach for references and inspiration with abandon— he’s seen her through blonde dreads, sculptural twists, and gravity-defying ponytails. They’re having lots of fun too—for the album title track’s music video, set in a corporate office turned voguing ball, twigs donned a Karen from HR pixie cut wig.
A high maintenance cut, with even higher pay-off.
