Comfy capsule wardrobe: From couch to errands

You know that moment when you’re wallowing on the couch in your rattiest sweats, perfectly content, and then — HORROR! — you realize you need to run a quick errand.

It’s like, you don’t want to put on a whole look look. You just want to be comfy and warm and, okay fine, a little bit cute.

Well, today I’m sharing a capsule (and outfits!) for that exact moment.

This winter capsule includes 10 core items:

  • two bottoms
  • two base layer tops
  • two sweaters
  • two coats
  • two shoes

Plus! I included a handful of accessories to round everything out.

Of course, you don’t have to have these exact pieces — you can use it as a template and create a couch-to-errands capsule from pieces you already have.

While the overall impression is pretty neutral, there’s actually SIX different colors here! Burgundy, chocolate brown, black, grey, cream, and white. These colors don’t necessarily jump out at you, but instead they add delicious depth and richness to a look.

And on the note of colors, this capsule is putting alllll the controversial color combos together — brown with burgundy, brown with black, cream with white, cream with grey. I say give me the controversy! It’s the quickest path to a non-boring outfit, especially when you’re working with quiet colors anyway.

Let’s return to our couch scenario. If you find yourself in that situation, here are 5 steps that’ll get you from couch to errands in no time!

Step 1 | Start with comfy bottoms

Two different pant shapes (track pant and legging) allow you to switch up your outfit silhouettes.

GILLY HICKS TRACK PANTS (under $35) | NIKE TRACK PANTS

GYMSHARK LEGGINGS | These have a hidden scrunch to subtly flatter the booty.

Step 2 | Add your base layer on top

ARITZIA 100% COTTON TEE

VUORI TANK | This tank has a built in bra so you don’t even have to wear a real one. I wear these tanks to every yoga class I teach and absolutely love them.

Step 3 | Add a cozy sweater/sweatshirt

For variety, go for a graphic sweatshirt and a clean sweater. This helps vary up the looks you can make when working within a small collection of clothing.

RUMORED SWEATER

ANINE BING SWEATSHIRT

Step 4 | Add a soft jacket that feels like a hug

The long wool coat is a game changer when going from couch to errands. Instant polish! Plus the long length will keep you warmer when you’re in leggings.

COS QUILTED JACKET | Love the dramatic shape and the hood.

ALC HOUNDSTOOTH COAT | SIMILAR FOR LESS: ASOS COAT

Step 5 | Finish with shoes and accessories

It’s so easy to skip the accessories part, so I like to make it easy on myself and grab ONE piece of jewelry (usually a hoop earring) and ONE hair accessory (like a claw clip or baseball cap).

BIRKENSTOCK BOSTON CLOGS

NIKE V2K SNEAKERS | My comfiest and favorite walking shoes of all time. So into this new burgundy colorway.

MACHETE CLAW CLIP

NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY TOTE

QUINCE NYLON BAG

COTTON ON CAP

ARITZIA SCRUNCH SOCKS

MADEWELL SUNGLASSES
