A Nutritionist’s Tip to Supercharge Your Bone Broth

Is there a phrase more synonymous with wellness right now than bone broth? The thin, golden-flecked liquid, touted as being able to repair intestinal lining, improve skin radiance, and generally fix your life, surged to popularity in the early 2010s and entered the mainstream not long after. Now, it’s hard to scroll on TikTok without coming across videos of people making bone broth in their kitchen. The easiest way to get all the benefits? Pop a few cartons of the ready-made stuff in your pantry and include it in your diet as and when you see fit.

A naturopathic nutritionist and author of The Hormonal Handbook, Jessica Shand has an easy trick for making it part of your wellbeing routine. Simply take a carton of bone broth and pour it equally into a large ice-cube tray. Sprinkle each with a teaspoon or so of chia seeds (a source of fiber, omega-3s, calcium, magnesium, and antioxidants), leave to freeze to solid, and you have your morning beverage preportioned. Simply pop out an individual bone broth cube each day and dunk it into a mug of boiling water. It’s like chia seed water, but even better.

“It’s a healing elixir that contains a powerhouse of anti-inflammatories and nutrients including collagen, amino acids and magnesium to nourish your body from the inside out,” Shand said on Instagram. She’s not wrong. Studies have shown that the anti-inflammatory properties of bone broth can help combat fatigue, while the amino acids (glycine and glutamine) help with immune function and gut health.

If you’re not into the idea of drinking bone broth, know that it’s not something you need to imbibe neat. Bone broth can be used to soak rice, grains, and beans, as a base for soups and stews.
