The co-hosts of this year’s Met Gala are no strangers to jewelry. All four are multi-hyphenates who champion the category. They wear it with pride, bend rules, and sometimes design pieces and collections themselves. History tells us that men have long embraced jewelry, and this year’s exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style shows the role these pieces played in the definition, development, and exuberance of dandyism.
Similarly to the dandy, our co-hosts use jewelry to refine their characters, and give an added personality zest to their wardrobe. Colman Domingo regularly incorporates watches, brooches, and rings to his red carpet attire. Pharrell and Lewis Hamilton are nary without layered necklaces, pearls, and pops of color. A$AP Rocky brings the sparkle and high wattage pieces. None are afraid to sport earrings, and all embrace the more is more philosophy.
As we gear up for the big night, we break down their style and ways to shop to achieve it yourself.
Colman Domingo
If awards season taught us anything, it’s that Colman Domingo is raising the bar for men’s style one red carpet look at a time. Each outfit packed a punch with an enviable amount of sparkle. From earrings to brooch-adorned blazers to layers of bracelets, rings, and necklaces, jewelry is an essential component of the Oscar-nominated actor’s final looks. As a self-proclaimed watch enthusiast, his wrist stack is rarely lacking a stylish timepiece. When it comes to red carpet dressing, the award-winning Domingo is sure to bring the bling—and now, you can too.
Pharrell Williams
Pharrell Williams has long been regarded a visionary for his creative endeavors spanning across music and fashion. Serving as men’s Creative Director at Louis Vuitton since 2023, it’s no surprise that when it comes to jewelry style, the multidisciplinarian doesn’t shy away from making a statement. His artfully layered jewels tend to follow a pattern, and we’ve broken down the formula.
First up in the equation: the base layer. These are the not-so-basic basics that go on first. Start with a chain necklace with an interesting link. Next up is the statement. These are the attention-grabbing pieces that get layered over the base—pearls, multicolored gems, beads, etc. Step three brings in rings and earrings, like a pair of yellow stone studs to match a signet ring. And lastly, the final adornments: odds and ends to add bling to your clothing. A classic brooch or pin ties it all together.
Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton is redefining what a Formula 1 champion looks like off of the track. The Scuderia Ferrari driver’s bold, colorful, and whimsical looks have garnered much attention in the style world and earned him the title of ‘champion of style’ as well. Lewis’s approach in this area was quite groundbreaking, as it broke free from traditional F1 dress codes and ushered in a new era for racers’ personal styles to flourish. Complementing Lewis’s exciting outfits is his daring jewelry style. He tends to opt for fun, youthful pieces, regularly layering beads, pearls, and tennis necklaces. Below, find some of our favorites to get the look.
A$AP Rocky
There are few men who wear jewelry as well as A$AP Rocky. He’s an undisputed style icon, and no stranger to a blinged out, bejeweled look. Pearls, gems, diamonds – he truly wears it all, and wears it oh-so-well. So much so, that we’re a bit convinced Rocky has never met a jewel he didn’t like. To put it plain and simple, the man has great taste, and perhaps, an even greater sense of style (but, then again, that’s to be expected from the man with a song called “Fashion Killa”). While no one could ever fully replicate Rocky’s unique style, we’ve curated a selection inspired by his some of his best jewelry moments that hopefully, spark some creativity.
