Opulence and minimalism may seem to be at odds with each other. On the one hand, minimalism has historically been defined by a less-is-more approach with clean lines and a pared-back aesthetic, while in contrast, opulence is all about an abundance of detail and a feast for the eyes. Yet this season, the two are no longer mutually exclusive. Right now, I’m noticing the rise in a cross section of the luxury market where the same clean lines and refinement are being reimagined in opulent finishes and with a certain visual richness that makes for an emerging aesthetic defined by pieces that are as luxurious to wear as they are to look at.
There are several designers that understand this precarious balance more than anyone. The first that comes to mind is Heirlome, a New York–based label that works with Latin American artisans to feature handwoven details and custom prints throughout. At Carven, Louise Trotter puts a refreshingly low-key spin on high-octane materials like satin and organza. And Tove’s innovative silhouettes are refined, though never boring. These are just a few of the designers who are defining the next wave of minimalism, one filled with plenty of soulful details.
