Stars, they’re just like us: They love a good deal! Sure, A-listers can afford to buy a brand-new Hermès bag, but what’s the fun in that? Increasingly, celebrities are tapping into the designer resale market instead, sourcing rare secondhand bags that are unique and one-of-a-kind. Everyone from Kylie Jenner to Rihanna have been spotted carrying cool vintage bags, and there’s one hotspot in Tokyo where they’re all flocking to: Meet Casanova Vintage.
Owned by Ebinabe, Casanova was founded in December 2019, and has fast become a go-to destination for special handbags. It has expanded to four different stores across Tokyo, including in prime shopping neighborhoods such as Ginza and Omatosando. “Our collection is carefully curated from a mix of domestic and international vendors,” says Ebinabe of Casanova’s assortment. “We have a dedicated buy-back store where customers can sell their pre-owned luxury products. This allows us to offer a unique selection of high-quality, secondhand luxury bags.”
Step into one of the four Casanova hotspots, and you’re bound to find classic quilted Chanel single flaps, or pristine Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags. Its largest speciality, however, is Louis Vuitton pieces—everything from Takashi Murakami shoulder styles from the 2000s, to even more rare collaboration pieces, such as the Comme des Garçons x LV bags. It’s no wonder why celebrities have flocked to the store, then: The exclusive bags (and hefty price tags) are simply begging for some red carpet action. (Or, at the very least, a paparazzi moment.)
But how did stars such as A$AP Rocky and Pharrell stumble upon the store, especially given Tokyo is a mecca for vintage? “Honestly, we’re not sure exactly when it started,” says Ebinabe of the cult celebrity following. Though, he has a few guesses. “There are many vintage stores and major retailers, but we’ve yet to see one with a style quite like ours. Casanova is more than just a shop—it’s an experience. From our one-of-a-kind selection to our approach to customer service and hospitality, we believe these elements create something special that keeps people coming back.”
