Didn’t you hear? Boho is back, baby!
When Chemena Kamali sent her inaugural Chloé collection down the runway earlier this year, it became instantly clear that a vibe shift was underway. Lo, the floodgates had opened, proven by the seemingly endless supply of It-girls to carry out her vision. If it wasn’t already clear when the front row was filled with attendees in the same wooden clogs, it was by the time that Original Boho Girl Sienna Miller gave it her stamp of approval at the 2024 Met Gala. “I felt so soothed watching that show—I wanted every single piece,” she told my colleague José Criales-Unzueta of Kamali’s debut. “It was like seeing my dream wardrobe walk past me.” Beyond the vibes, Vogue Business’s Madeleine Schulz reported that the day after the show, searches for Chloé had spiked 37% on The RealReal.
Since then, the likes of Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sydney Sweeney, Jennifer Lopez, and Kaia Gerber have all jumped aboard the trend, dressed in Kamali’s confections. While there’s only so many flowy dresses to go around for the ravenous cadre of It-girls, the house has proven its versatility. The brand recently dipped into pants—or, rather, pantaloons—dressing Anya Taylor-Joy and Keira Knightley in lace and velvet trousers. Elsewhere, Suki Waterhouse emerged in a Penny Lane-esque coat from the resort 2025 collection. It’s an exciting expansion on Kamali’s vision that we can only imagine will carry into 2025.
But boho-chic has come back in ways that surpass the Chloé archetype. On a vacation in Saint-Tropez, Amal Clooney stayed loyal to the last iteration of the trend, dressed in a colorful, multi-patterned mini dress from Stella McCartney’s 2015 resort collection and Cindy Crawford paired a patterned Ulla Johnson midi skirt with a graphic tee and leather sandals. Kaia Gerber and Erykah Badu incorporated boho elements into their wardrobes, pairing graphic tees with a ruffled skirt and fringed jacket, respectively. And while Miller gave the new school boho her approval, Ashley Olsen, one half of the American queens, kept it old school in a green embroidered kimono at the Whitney Museum gala.
While Chloé is undeniably paving a new way forward, this year proved that there’s plenty of room under the tent. Here, see some of the best boho looks from 2024.
