Whether you’re into your birthday or not, everybody wants to feel their best on their big day, to start off a new year on the right foot. Katie Holmes seemed to echo that sentiment today—her 46th birthday—when she added a little pizzazz to an otherwise understated look.
The actor headed to the Barrymore Theater to perform a matinee show of Our Town, where she bundled up in a black beanie and weather appropriate coat. Holmes wore her beloved barrel jeans from Nili Lotan with a pair of black leather boots, and a navy blue peacoat—collar up. She accessorized with a pair of sepia aviators and a black leather tote.

While she opted for a cinched waist, she took a far different approach than a simple trench coat. Over her jacket, Holmes added a gold-plated belt from Maison Mayle, which was adorned with a black leather-threaded chain hanging between two engraved coins. The baroque accessory is a far cry from the actor’s usual everywoman style—but can you blame Katie Holmes for wanting to dress up on her birthday?
