In its heyday, going to the mall was an absolute event that necessitated an outfit worthy of the occasion—we’re talking Abercrombie jeans, Hollister tees, the freshest pair of Converse. But as online shopping boomed, malls fell by the wayside. Then yesterday in Los Angeles, Zendaya and Tom Holland made a case for the return of the mall ’fit.
The two braved the Topanga Mall, the San Fernando Valley’s crown jewel shopping center. It’s a gathering place for strollers (of the baby and walking variety), unsupervised tweens (this writer once purchased synthetic purple clip-in hair extension from the Topanga Hot Topic), and last-minute holiday shoppers. It’s safe to say that the pair fall into the latter category.
While I wouldn’t wish the hellish pre-holiday mall rush on my worst enemy, Zendaya and Holland—joined by their dog, Noon—made the errand run look cool. Holland wore a gray Ami long-sleeve polo with a pair of on-trend baggy dark-wash jeans and gray and white sneakers. Zendaya, meanwhile, made a simple look befit a fashion girl. She opted for a sleeveless white crewneck muscle shirt with a pair of black cropped trousers. But it was her shoes that elevated the look: a pair of black Maison Margiela Tabi boots. The split-toe ankle boot aren’t exactly synonymous with mall style, but if anyone can induct them into the canon, it’s Zendaya.
