What does a busy pop star pack in their Birkin? If they’re Dua Lipa, a “chaotic” assortment of books, hot sauces, and wired headphones are just a few must-haves “A lot of stuff that’s in my bag, I just collect throughout my travels,” Lipa tells Vogue as she pulls things out of her Hermès carryall for the latest installment of In the Bag. Adorning the bag are cute charms that the singer picked up during recent trips to Japan and India. As for the contents, there’s a method to Lipa’s madness.
In addition to essentials like her laptop, car keys, passport, and notepad, every item in Lipa’s bag serves a purpose. Her books, for example, help keep her sane and relaxed during tour; Lipa is currently reading Hernán Diaz’s In the Distance and Not a River by Selva Almada. “I carry two [books] in my handbag, and then I have more in my suitcase, especially if I’m gone for long periods of time,” she says. Lipa also hosts a monthly book club on her digital platform, Service95, delving into her favorite literature. “It’s just books that I’ve read that I love and choose for the month,” she says of the selections, “and we see if the authors want to join us for a conversation.”
Given that Lipa is often in a different city every night while on tour, the singer also carries a handful of condiments in her purse. “I always carry hot sauce with me because it just makes every meal better,” she says. The star also has a tendency to cart around multiples of everything—including wired headphones and sunglasses. “I accumulate them,” she says of her various sunnies— “different ones for different outfits, or if my mood changes for the day.” As for the most unexpected item in her Birkin? That would be her trustee deck of tarot cards, which entertain and ground her on the road. “I love to pull out a card every day,” she says. “Sometimes when I want to make a decision, I’ll pull one out and see what it tells me.” She pulls one out for Vogue and it reads: “Life is magical.” We’ll take it!
