Feeling like it’s the end of the world? Waking up every morning afraid to turn on the news? Are there any reasons to be cheerful, you are asking yourself, any flimsy reason for laughter in the dark? We hear you, over here at Lynn Loves Jewelry! And because we have been known to view the world through jewel-colored glasses (admittedly tricky, but we can do it) we are happy to report that there are certain glittery prizes that actually do seem to embody hope and change.
After all, a ballerina twirling in her jewelry box home keeps spinning no matter what is going on outside her little universe. You might feel like crying, but a smiley face ring, rendered in precious stones, will keep grinning on your finger. And nothing can stop a diamond bird from soaring high in the sky. Still not convinced? Consider the case of Mickey Mouse, whose funny, sunny visage has come to the rescue at least once before.
In 1933, the very depth of the global economic depression, the Ingersoll-Waterbury watch company launched the first Mickey Mouse watch. Like so many other enterprises, Ingersoll was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, but Mickey saved the day—upon its release, Macy’s sold 11,000 of these cartoon watches. They retailed for $3.75, and they proved remarkably sturdy. (We can attest to this: we actually own one of the original 1930s models, and it is still ticking—well, sort of.)
So may we humbly suggest that you seek solace in a piece of joyful jewelry, a special treat that offers a bit of consolation while we wait for the clouds to clear? Below, a roster of happy pieces, including—because we can find anything!—an exact replica of that original 1930s Mickey watch.
