Earlier this year, I came across Liza Belmonte’s post, “Have you picked out your seven outfits of the season?”
In it, she proposes that if you want to make getting dressed easier, all you’ve got to do is figure out the 7 most common scenarios that pop up in your day to day life, then come up with a loose outfit formula you can apply to each scenario.
I’m always down to try out a good wardrobe framework like this! So I’ve been thinking through this exercise for my own fall wardrobe. Here are my 7 scenarios for this fall:
- Working from a coffee shop / errands
- Casual, at-home hangs with friends
- Family dinners
- Working out / teaching yoga
- Lounging at home
- Nights out / holiday evening events
- Rainy days (I included this one because I’m often stumped on what to wear when it’s rainy out — a little planning would probably help me out a ton here!)
Today’s outfit — mini skirt + big sweater + flat boots — would work for scenarios 1 and 2. And if I were to swap the flat boots for heeled boots, it could even work for scenario 6 (remember Monday’s outfit?).

This idea is really helping me as we transition into cooler weather, so I plan to do a few more posts on the topic as I come up with outfits that match my 7 scenarios. I’m excited to share as I go!
Two tiny styling notes about this look:
• Little details make the difference! That white tee peeking out gives the outfit a more casual feel.
