Did Katie Holmes Just Bring Back Color-Blocking at the 2024 CFDA Awards?

Every year, the CFDA Awards are a place for attendees to put their best foot forward—and take exciting fashion risks. The night, after all, is all about celebrating American designers who are forward-thinking and innovative—so why shouldn’t guests do the same with their looks on the red carpet? Tonight at the 2024 ceremony in New York City, Katie Holmes was one such stylish attendee: The star wore a striking Carolina Herrera gown that revived a divisive 2010s trend. Yes, we are talking about color-blocking.

Holmes’s long-sleeved gown—with a cutout exposing her back and sides—was designed by Wes Gordon for the label, and finished in juxtaposing hues of pink and red with a big black bow along the back. The clashing of pink and red instantly called to mind the color-blocking trend that dominated a large part of the 2010s; That exact color combination appeared in the spring 2011 collections of Gucci and Jil Sander, among others. Tonight, Holmes added dangling crystal earrings to her look in the same upbeat colors.
