On Monday night, a variety of cast members and supporters gathered at LOOK Cinemas for a special screening of Goodrich—a film directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyerthat and guided by Michael Keaton and Mila Kunis, who served as both lead actors and executive producers.
“This is a story about the modern family, and I suspect that all of you will laugh and cry because there’s a certain element that we can all resonate with here,” producer Daniela Taplin Lundberg shared in opening remarks.
In the dramatic comedy, Keaton plays a gallerist and father who finds himself at a crossroads. After his wife checks herself into a rehab facility, he’s left with the care of their nine-year-old twins. Leaning on his daughter (Kunis) and new friends, including a fellow father played by Michael Urie, Keaton navigates a deeper type of family life. The experience pushes him to think beyond the gallery he’s relied on for so long and reconsider his priorities. The cast is filled out by Chloe Troast, Andie MacDowell, Danny Deferrari, and Noa Fisher.
“I loved the specificity of the story and family relationships. The attention to detail is real enough to get sucked in and emotionally invested,” Urie shared after the screening. “I hope that this film encourages people to call someone they love.”
A true passion project for Meyers-Shyer, the film’s multi-generational representation and its characters’ diverse walks of life were an intentional storytelling strategy. In this way, movie-goers have individual entry points, while being able to rally around the collective story.
“I wanted to do something that would thread the needle between the movies I’ve always admired and make something for everyone,” Meyers-Shyer explained.
After the viewing, the attendees spilled out into a festive reception to discuss the production and toast the film’s upcoming theatrical release on October 18. Guests included entertainment and art world peers such as Sarah Hoover, B.J. Novak, Romilly Newman, Delaney Rowe, Molly Howard, Sara Moonves, Heidi Bivens, and more. In an evening of celebration and exploration of family life, the film gave viewers manifold themes to reflect on long after the credits rolled.
