Track pants with ballet flats? Okay, I see you! I like to think Allison Bornstein would be proud of me — after all, she’s the brilliant mind behind the Wrong Shoe Theory (the concept of wearing an unexpected shoe to add interest to your outfit).
Last fall, I was very into baggy, wide leg pants, but I struggled when it came to tops to pair them with. I didn’t feel vibrant when I’d pair baggy pants with oversized sweaters, but I also didn’t enjoy wearing tight, constricting tops either.
Remember the scene in Wall-E when he’s trying to categorize a spork, but his little robot brain can’t figure out whether to put it with the forks or the spoons? This scene always makes me laugh, and it makes me want to give myself a hug, because I relate to it a little too much.
I often catch myself thinking in an either-or paradigm — meanwhile there’s this whole beautiful middle ground there just waiting for me. When I remember it’s there, it feels like a whole body exhale.
Soo bringing it back to fashion, my current favorite middle ground top is this shrunken-yet-relaxed sweater from Reformation. Neither tight nor oversized. Just comfortable and easy. Works like a charm with my baggy pants.
Anyway, if you’re stuck in an either-or rut about something today — whether it’s a big life decision or something as small as your sweater choice — consider this your invitation to come on out to the middle ground.
