In a generation where the internet has found comfort in exploiting fat-curated spaces, it’s almost been embedded in society’s DNA to exclude larger individuals from the general population of humanity. Conversations surrounding body positivity are (unfairly) met with unsolicited “confidence boosters,” such as the infamous “you’re not fat; you’re beautiful” line. Feelings are disregarded for a few laughs and likes because making “fun” of bigger people is the quick come-up for cyber-world comedians. Think pieces regarding our community are discussed by those only willing to put on their activism gear when it’s “hot.” Self-proclaimed admirers are hiding their fetishism with false advocacy. We’ve had enough.
While we could go on (and on) about fat politics, we’re ending the year with a (lighthearted yet honest) list of big girl “no-nos” as we move into this increased era of visibility and inclusivity. Our voices are allowed to be higher than what’s on the scale. And we’re no longer afraid to say what’s simply annoying in this age of unapologeticness.

Whereas periods like ‘fat girl summer’ and ‘fat girl fall’ have been the staple of the plush-pal takeover, we’re here to let you know those aren’t the only seasons we’re dominating. We’re year-round! While they aren’t the most offensive, they’re played out and feed into the ideology that we aren’t those girls every day of the week. Honey, we’re in your face and here to stay! Like it, love it, or leave it.
2. “BBW Lovers”
It’s one thing to support, it’s another thing to sexualize. As if “BBW” isn’t already debatable enough, men have run the term to the ground. Although we greatly appreciate our true admirers, we all know that one person who loves plus size women and makes their infatuation their whole online identity (username included). If you go to the nearest pro-big-girl TikToker’s page, the comments are filled with those who take the said male’s attraction to us as if it’s a badge of honor that we’re his chosen preference. As a result, it creates this sense of pedestalization. To our fellow fine fatties, no one deserves a cookie for desiring us.
3. Confidence Compliments
We’ve all heard the “I love your confidence!” whenever someone sees us wearing a dress that hugs our rolls a little tighter than they’re used to looking at. Although one may have good intent, they don’t realize how shady it could come off… at times. Why do we have to be “confident” to have the guts to show a tad bit of skin? Complimenting a voluptuous woman on her “courage” to sport something is rooted in the controversial belief that “dressing for your body type” strictly applies to queens of larger size. Furthermore, shouldn’t all women (generally) have a level of confidence, regardless of their weight?
4. The Rise of “Big Back”
Don’t fight us because we know how you all like to tussle, but… “big back” should have been removed from social media’s vocabulary by 11:59 P.M. on New Year’s Eve. What started as a quick wave has become a global phenomenon. Not only does it put plus size bodies at the butt of the joke, but it also carries the theory that all heavier people are (automatically) in poor health and have excessive eating patterns. Food intake isn’t the only thing that contributes to obesity.

Speaking of obesity, promoting your flat tummy Takis or diet Doritos in our DMs is more problematic than the unhealthiness you claim we promote by authentically embracing our existence. With gym culture shoving itself down our newsfeeds, losing weight isn’t something we need to be reminded of and should be a personal decision. We each have different journeys. Let people follow theirs when the time is right… for them.
6. Essays on Why You Think “Bigger Is Better”
Along with the “BBW lovers” often come Facebook and X posts about the “perks” of dating a plus size woman. Contrary to these viral think pieces, every fluffy sista isn’t so desperate for love and attention that we’re willing to go to unreasonable lengths to keep our partners happy. No, you won’t always have a homecooked meal on the stove after we’ve run our million-dollar businesses all day (um, hello, manifestation!), nor will we go above and beyond in the bedroom without the pleasure reciprocated. Additionally, while we do have quite the cushion, we’re not a built-in teddy bear and cuddle buddy. Sometimes, we want to be held, too.
7. Brands “for Fat People” That Don’t Go Past 2/3X
Alright… let’s wake it up. If you’re a retailer, flaunting that your company is inclusive is invalid if the only size you go up to is a 2X (maybe 3X on a good day). Through observation, many clothing companies don’t cater to curvier bodies outside of the pear-shaped ratio. However, it’s important to remember that throwing a couple of Xs on the tag doesn’t mean you’re a brand for every body. Material matters–and so do our apple-shaped beauties.
8. Unrealistic Plus Size Clothing Models
Online purchasing is (literally) the go-to for (almost) everyone these days. As a full-figured woman, shopping is (already) a task. It’s even more frustrating to browse a website and notice that none of the display models closely depict your body type, leaving the review section as your only source of hope. Some plus size people have physical restraints, while others loathe having to go inside a store and deal with an associate who doesn’t know how to assist them. Creating a fair shopping experience for all (online) would keep y’all from upsetting us and our homegirls in 2025.
9. Secret Admirers
Hiding your plus size queen or the fact that you dig us has never been okay and shouldn’t ever be. Men like this aren’t worth our time and entertainment. Fellas, we deserve to be shown off just as you’d trophy the lady with the size 8 figure. Also, hopping in our messages telling us how good-looking we are but cutting up on your social media timeline as if you’d “never date a big girl” only shows loser traits. Love us out loud or don’t love us at all.
